How this calculator works
The 50/30/20 rule is a simple starting framework for budgeting take-home pay: roughly 50% toward needs, 30% toward wants, and 20% toward savings or extra debt payments. This calculator applies those percentages - or any custom split you choose - directly to your monthly take-home income.
The math itself is straightforward multiplication: each category's dollar amount is your income multiplied by that category's percentage. What matters more is deciding, honestly, what belongs in each bucket for your own life.
If your own percentages don't add to 100%, that's fine - the calculator still shows the exact dollar amount for whatever percentage you enter in each field, so you can experiment freely before settling on a split.
